Becoming the Housewife MacGyver IN THE KITCHEN

Welcome to June! Amongst the summer craziness (including a family trip for us), this month we are learning to become a little bit more MacGyver in the kitchen. 

If you're just joining us, this year-long series about Becoming the Housewife MacGyver is all about gaining self-reliance, bit by bit, by learning to better use and manage our resources. That may sound like a stretch to learn from the man with the mullet, but MacGyver does it his way and we'll do it ours. :) You can read all about Housewife MacGyver and catch up on the last 5 months (can you believe it?) of posts here.

So, self-reliance in the kitchen is feeling more confident and knowing our options in the kitchen -- how to use what we have available to the best ends possible for ourselves and our families. Coming to share some assorted self-reliance topics with us this month are...

Okay, now that you're back and completely amazed with the awesome guests who will be joining us in the next few weeks, let's get personal: what are YOU going to do this month to become a little more MacGyver in the kitchen?

You could spice up the dinner (or lunch or breakfast) menu and try a food you've never tried before.

You could go old-school and make a sauce from scratch that you normally buy in a jar. 

You could actually PLAN a menu... and maybe even stick to the plan. :)

You could learn how to preserve food -- jerky, jelly, good ol' freezer meals

You could grow a garden... or keep it even simpler and grow an herb garden.

Personally, my goal this month is to learn to cook squash so that it doesn't taste like squash so that my family will eat it. If strawberries go on sale again, I'll be making more jam, too. Because it's SO easy and SO yummy.

How are you earning your MacGyver mullet (in name only... please don't go to the salon and request The MacGyver) this month? Baby steps...

I would be interested both in how to cook squash so it doesn't taste like it (I personally love it, but I've gotta be prepared for picky eaters!), AND your strawberry jam recipe. You're pretty "MacGyver" to me--I've never made jam!! In fact, I once canned peaches that smelled a *little* alcohol-y when I opened them a year later...does that count? :) Maybe my goal will be jam--baby steps!! :)

I bake and puree squash and then add it to other meals, like spaghetti sauce:)

So excited for this month!

I love squash!!! It's so yummy steamed and with butter. This months theme has the wheels turning...really want to learn how to make bread and how to can anything!

Yum! I love squash! There are some great pasta, soup, and bread recipes out there that make it delicious:-) My favorite "dessert" is roasted butternut squash with a little butter and brown sugar! xoxo
